But have you ever found yourself looking for content ideas that will appeal to your ideal customer?

The key is to be strategic about the content you create if it’s going to turn browsers into buyers.

Focus on topics that will appeal to your ideal customer and bring them to your website.

Find content ideas that attract your ideal customers

Start with your sales funnel and current customers

What questions are you asking all the time? Our own frequently asked questions can often lead us to content ideas that will help grow our business.

  • Start by thinking about the questions you are constantly being asked and writing them down. At this point, there is no right or wrong question. You can go through them later and determine which ones you want to pursue and which ones you want to ignore. What should your ideal customer know before buying?
  • Think about the questions your ideal customer doesn’t know how to ask, but still needs to know before they buy. Go through your sales notes and think about the process you follow with prospects in your sales funnel. What information do you think they need to consider before deciding to buy? There may be content ideas here. What do they want to do so that your product or service can help them?
  • Now think about how your customers use your product or service. What could they do with your product that you can help teach them? What might they want to accomplish, and where is your product is the solution or tool they need to get the job done?

For example, I worked with a makeup brand and we saw a lot of people asking for makeup tutorials. They wanted to learn how to create specific looks, so we decided to create videos and blog posts teaching them how to create those specific looks.

Our products were featured in the videos, so people who watched the video were more likely to buy products from that customer than from someone else because they saw it used to get the look they wanted.

Snoop on competition

Look around you and see what your competitors are doing on their websites, blog, or social media.

Don’t just copy your competitors. Think of this as a content search audit. Take note of what they do and what subscribers respond to.

  • Do they do a lot of reels or tutorials on YouTube or Instagram?
  • Do they write blog posts that highlight the features of specific products?
  • Are they aimed at the benefits?
  • How does the audience react (if you can say)?

Use keyword research tools To attract your ideal customers

Go to Google and run a search with keywords related to your business and the content topic you’re thinking of.

What you see in the search results are the terms that people are looking for right now. Google will try to automatically fill your search bar with the information it deems relevant to your query. Pay attention to all relevant suggestions.

Take a look at everything that appears in AutoComplete. This data can be useful when you’re trying to come up with content ideas that will appeal to your customers.

Use online search tools

You can use a tool like AnswerThePublic to find out what questions people are asking about topics related to your business.

Search with your main keyword and see what questions the tool generates.

Use your website

Does your website have a site search function?

Find out what questions or keywords your current customers are looking for on your website. You may find that people are looking for specific information that you don’t have on your website or that isn’t easy to find.

These results can help you write blogs or FAQs

Social Listening

Spend some time on social media by simply listening to the conversation.

Join a few social media groups where your ideal customer spends time and listens to the conversation.

  • See what questions people are asking.
  • Is wrong information shared? If so, you may need to create content about myths or mistakes people make in connection with your domain, product, or service.
  • Are they looking for solutions that you propose? Take note of what they are asking for and the language they are using, as this is how you will be able to connect with them.

Organize your brainstorming ideas and notes

Take all your notes, brainstorm ideas, go back to your keyword research tool, and dig a little deeper into the ideas and keywords you might consider using.

You can even find additional content topics in the keywords you discover. Today, many queries are in the form of questions, and many of them are great topics for blog posts.

Choose the topics that you think will work best for your ideal customer.

Decide if your product or service is an option for that customer, or if you can really bring value if they read your blog post.

Next, choose the keyword(s) for which you have the best chance of ranking. You’ll often want to choose the keywords with the highest search demand and the lowest competition.

Decide what type of content you’ll create

When deciding what kind of content to create, think about your ideal customer. Are they going to be helped the most with a video or blog post with lots of images? What will bring them the most value?

Suppose you create a tutorial such as my client’s makeup tutorials. In this case, you’ll probably want to use video, as it will help your ideal customer more than a blog post with images.

If you’re creating a checklist or something that will guide your ideal customer through a process leading to a purchase decision, you can create a blog post with images and maybe even a checklist that they can reference later.

Create useful content

Your next step is to create this valuable content.

Don’t focus on using your keyword X number of times or writing X number of words. Instead, focus on telling your ideal customer what they need to know about it.

Bring value by answering their questions. You will naturally use the keywords you have chosen because your content is about a related topic. But you can always go back and review your article when you’re done and see if you can add additional keywords or remove them if they’re used too many times.

Make sure your content is optimized to get organic traffic

Be sure to optimize every piece of content you want Google to find and share with more new customers.

Follow SEO best practices and use your keywords in the title, meta description, URL, copy, header tags, image file name, and ALT text of your image.

  • Choose topics that interest you and are looking for your ideal customer.
  • Write great content that helps them and optimize the content for Google. As long as you choose keywords that your website can rank for, you’ll start seeing results.
